Philippa Garson is a South African journalist, writer and media consultant living in New York. She has decades of experience writing in-depth, analytical articles, turning complex ideas into readable, compelling text, telling stories, and putting a human face to topics of international interest. Having worked as a journalist in South Africa for many years, she has a deep understanding of the challenges facing developing countries and societies in transition. Philippa is passionate about health and global development issues and has published regularly in Forbes Woman Africa, humanitarian news website, The New Humanitarian, and US-based Everyday Health. She has covered a wide range of topics including health, social justice, reproductive health, HIV, migration, climate change, organized crime and drug policy.

Philippa has written for Foreign Policy MagazineSunday TimesSunday IndependentHarpers & QueenMail & GuardianCosmopolitanArise MagazineBBC News, and many other media outlets. She has also written thought leaders and other content for clients including Johnson & Johnson’s CaringCrowd global health initiative, Rabin Martin (Merck for Mothers), and Concern Worldwide. She currently works as an Associate Medical Director at ClinicalMind, where she creates HIV-related content for healthcare providers and community advocates.

In South Africa Philippa worked as an investigative journalist and political reporter for Mail & Guardian (formerly Weekly Mail), and then as editor of the newspaper’s sister publication, The Teacher. She has won two media awards, been shortlisted for a Nieman Fellowship and selected to participate in four UN Foundation Press Fellowships.

Philippa loves the cultural diversity and fast pace of New York City but still regards South Africa as home. She has written a memoir on her experiences covering township violence in the run-up to the country’s first democratic elections. Entitled Undeniable: Memoir of a Covert War, her book was published by Jacana Media in March 2020.
